Richard Cramer's current series of “Bird” drawings, measuring 30 by 40 inches each, combine intricate structure with pen and ink drawing on paper. Using black ink and a crow-quill pen, Cramer chooses a theme for background, often involving signage as well as places he has been, and later birds are added to the scene. The birds are developed from automatic drawings that are then recreated and refined in the final piece. The last step in creating the artwork involves decisions to selectively apply color to the birds and backgrounds.
